In the middle of August, I wrote briefly on one of my Instagram post captions about a Netflix movie I watched called Purple Heart. With Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine starring in the main roles. There are so many reasons why I found this movie so exceptional, from the plot down to casting and the actual execution of the film. If you are a movie buff like me, you realise that this movie teaches you so much about life.
The movie is about a girl named Cassie who has diabetes and comes from a working-class home and life. She cannot necessarily afford the medication to save her life. She desires to be a singer, but having diabetes is stopping her from living out her dreams. Then comes this marine soldier with very different and opposing views to Cassie. Cassie is a liberal, and the marine, Luke is a conservative who got into some trouble. Both find a way to work together and cut a deal despite their dislike of each other and opposing views and decide to get married due to the benefits being a married marine brings. Cassie got free healthcare, and Luke got extra money to help pay off some debts he owed.
One of Cassie's (Sofia Carson) lines was 'risk nothing, gain nothing.' It was tattooed on her, and I love that saying so much as that line was the whole film's concept. Everything they did by getting married was a risk as it was a fraud, illegal, and not to mention they were complete opposites. But by risking getting caught and charged, they got married anyways. They gained so much more in life than they could ever imagine. Cassie got better, and Luke, her husband, became her muse which gave her songwriting inspiration and made a whole career out of it. Luke's relationship with his father got rekindled. Both find a sense of purpose and belonging with each other. And without getting married and risking it all, neither of them would have grown and flourished, found love with each other and more in themselves.
Sometimes in life, two worlds collide and when they can put their differences aside. A new world and life that could be so amazing and wonderful better than before can manifest. It may not always be the case, but this move shows anything is possible, and that's true to life. Nobody knows the blessings that could potentially be blocked due to a lack of open-mindedness and not being open to understanding people. This film creates a bridge between two sides, being open to seeing people as more than the visceral surface-level stuff and not being afraid to go deeper and see their hearts.
With that saying, you can take that with you in every part of your life, whether opening yourself up to making new friends, pursuing your dreams and passion, going on that trip, starting the gym, or simply going to grab a coffee. You will never know what can become of your life if you do not go out and try. At times it may prove difficult, but after a while, we can discern what's worthwhile.
If you risk nothing, you will gain nothing.
